Northern Ontario Fishing

Northwestern Ontario - Fishing & Towns

Northern Ontario lies on the Canadian Shield, an ancient mountain range. The area is covered in rich forests and dotted with thousands of lakes.  Although it makes up 87% of the land mass of Ontario it only has 7% of the population.  Northern Ontario is known world wide as a sportsman's paradise with excellent fishing and hunting.

Sydney Lake is a Northern Ontario fishing camp located in the part of the province known as Northwestern Ontario which runs from Marathon to the Manitoba border and north to Hudson's Bay.

Minaki

Minaki Ontario is Located on the Winnipeg River north of Kenora.  To get here take HWY 596 from Kenora.  Fly-In fishing trips to Sydney Lake Lodge are with River Air Service located a few hundred feet up hwy 525, 4 miles before Minaki.  Paradise Cove is a good place to overnight in Minaki the night before your trip.  Minaki Airport is close to River Air's seaplane base and has a 2800 foot strip for those flying to Minaki with their own aircraft or by charter.

Fishing

Many people know about good fishing in the Minaki Area on the Winnipeg River and English River.  But few know about how much better the fishing is 46 miles north where a short float plane trip can get you to the real deal.  Sydney and Kilburn Lakes are visited only by a select few fishermen every year and the only access is by aircraft - keeping the quality of the fishery very high.

Minaki Lodge

Minaki is a railway town where Canadian National built Minaki Lodge in 1914 as one of their premier locations like the Banff Springs Hotel. In 2003 it burnt to the ground uninsured.

Kenora

Kenora is the nearest major town to Minaki. There is a Safeway grocery store, motels and hotels and bait and tackle stores. Kenora is also home of Husky the Musky on the beautiful Kenora waterfront on Lake of the Woods. Many people are aware of good fishing in the Kenora area on Lake of the Woods - but its far better if you fly out to remote locations where conservation has kept the fisheries in pristine shape for trophy walleye lake trout and northern pike fishing. You can fly into Sydney Lake directly from the Kenora waterfront but we recommend flying in from Minaki where the short drive reduces flight costs.
